NCLT 301 The Creative Writing Experience

Purpose

The overall purpose of this course is to introduce the beginning student to the fundamentals of creative writing (primarily fiction) through a series of reading assignments and writing exercises.

Learning Objectives

  1. To introduce the beginning student to the fundamental concepts of creative writing (primarily fiction), i.e., setting, characterization, dialogue, suspense techniques, flashbacks, point of view, etc.
  2. To equip the student with a vocabulary for discussing/critiquing the creative writing of others as well as his/her own work.
  3. To provide the beginning student with the necessary skills to write a poem or short story.
